Willow bark has been used for centuries to alleviate pain, especially joint and muscle pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis. The active ingredient, salicin, is closely related to aspirin and functions as an anti-inflammatory, reducing swelling and joint stiffness.
Willow bark also has antiseptic properties which make it useful in treating skin irritations such as eczema or psoriasis. In addition, willow bark can be effective in reducing fever and headaches. Although generally considered safe when taken orally or applied topically in appropriate doses, caution should be exercised by those allergic to aspirin or taking blood thinners or other medications that may interact with the herb.
Willow bark supplements are available in a variety of forms including capsules, tablets, tinctures, teas or powders.
